1. CIES Symposium 2017: “Interrogating and Innovating CIE Research”

The second CIES Symposium will be held from October 26-27, 2017, at the Arlington campus of George Mason University. Hosted by members of the Gender and Education Committee, the South Asia SIG and faculty at GMU, the theme for the 2017 symposium is, “Interrogating and innovating CIE research”.

Anchoring this symposium is the notion that how comparative and international education phenomena are studied, the questions we ask, the tools we use and the epistemological, ontological, and ideological orientations they reflect, shape the nature of the knowledge produced, the value placed on that knowledge, and of critical importance, its pedagogy and implications for practice in diverse societies globally. Moreover, that from both within and beyond the field of Comparative and International Education (CIE), scholars and practitioners have raised concerns about the colonial and neo-colonial practices and dynamics that have been reproduced and/or have characterized (in part) the history of CIE.

Through distinguished plenary speakers, breakout sessions, concurrent paper sessions and workshops, we will provide spaces and resources for students, junior and senior scholars, practitioners and policymakers to not only interrogate and challenge existing practice, but to learn and develop new ways of thinking about and doing CIE research.

2. CIES 2018: “Re-Mapping Global Education: South-North Dialogue”

The 62nd CIES Annual Meeting will take place in Mexico City, Mexico, from March 25-29, 2018.

The theme of CIES 2018, “Re-mapping Global Education,” aims to shift the traditional starting point of research to a greater extent toward the global South. This shift not only enables South-North dialogue, but also enhances North-South dialogue and the expansion of South- South collaboration. The new map requires us as scholars and practitioners to expand our awareness of the voices, actors and knowledge producers that have historically been marginalized in educational research and institutions. Taking advantage of the widening epistemological parameters of our field, we will focus the conversation on theories and methodologies produced in the global South, with a view toward exploring new voices around the globe. This perspective impels us to forge commitments with greater dedication more than ever across all kinds of borders and to re-envision possibilities for cooperation and mutual support in advancing education research and practice.

3. FreshEd #76: Exploring Global Citizenship Education (Miri Yemini)

What is global citizenship education and how is it practiced? And what is the relationship between national citizenship and global citizenship? Are they compatible?

My guest today is Miri Yemini, a Honorary Visiting Lecturer at the Institute of Education at University College London and a Lecturer in the School of Education at Tel Aviv University. She has recently published a book entitled Internationalization and Global Citizenship in Education.

4. Call for Proposals: Second International Higher Education Studies Conference (IHEC)

“Reconsidering World-Class University: Global university rankings, academic excellence, policy borrowing, and national relevancy”

The second IHEC Conference will be held from October 12-14, 2017, in Antalya, Turkey.

The main goal of this conference is to promote collaboration, share and discuss emerging practices, trends, research findings and theoretical perspectives in the context of today’s higher education. With the rise of economic competition in the global world, many countries have started to make investments to boost the economic performance, and so to establish world-class universities. Global university rankings have also contributed to the reproduction and sustainability of the term world-class university. Many universities are now trying to emulate the characteristics of world-class universities to be at the top of those global university rankings. These all make it imperative to carefully examine how the term world-class university has evolved since its appearance. One of the most important reasons for this is the tradition of policy borrowing from the developed countries, which is quite common in the developing countries but not effective because of low levels of alignment with national and local needs. The conference, thus, aims to examine the World-Class University phenomenon and to find solutions to the problems surrounding this phenomenon.

**5. Call for Proposals: Spotlight on China Book Series**

Spotlight on China is a book series published by Sense Publishers. Over the past decades China has experienced unprecedented economic liberalization, industrialization, mass migration, urbanization, and privatization, which have contributed to the rise of China as an emerging economic superpower. At the same time, China is also facing unprecedented challenges, including rising unemployment, socio-economic disparity, corruption, and environment degradation. Spotlight on China aims to bring together international scholars with contributions from new and established scholars to explore the profound social and economic transformation that has resulted from the market economy and its concomitant impact on education and society in China. The Series includes authored and edited collections offering multidisciplinary perspectives and most contemporary and comprehensive analyses of recent social and educational changes in China.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal please submit the following: a 500-word summary of your book proposal, including the title; focus and research questions; the connection to the bookseries; the theoretical and/or conceptual framework; the major themes to be explored; a draft table of contents; type of book: single author, edited, etc.; 10 keywords; a 150-word biography for eachauthor/editor; confirmation that the contents of the book have not been published elsewhere; also include your CV.

6. Call for Submissions: Diaspora, Indigenous, and Minority Education (DIME)

Special Issue: “Refugee Education, Inclusion and Innovation in South Asia: Challenges and Opportunities”

In the global refugee policy discourse, India and South Asia do not feature much as sites of focus for international academic investigation and policy innovation, partly because the states have non-signatory status to the 1951 Convention…This special edition of the journal seeks to build on that emerging body of scholarship and contribute a series of journal articles addressing the subject of refugee education and innovation. This is a broad category of investigation that will tackle issues such as: the role of private initiatives offering school-age education for refugee children in the absence of state support; “enterprise education” for refugees through the incubation of refugee entrepreneurs, and its significance as a model for supporting refugee livelihood development; the evolution of academic research on “South Asian refugeedom” in higher education institutes; why the gaps require redress if South Asian experiences are to speak to global policy; and educating law students on South Asian refugee case law, in the absence of a domestic and regional legal framework. These are important areas of study that explore key issues which are under-analysed within the South Asian context. More serious and extensive scholarship is much needed that highlights and critically analyses emerging “best practice” activities focused on a fragmented, vulnerable, and often overlooked migrant group in a diverse and most populous region of the world.
Possible topics include but are not limited to:

Religion and identity among migrant refugee students
The “problematization” of refugee students in host society schools
Representation of migrants and refugees in school curricula
Educating refugee children in the Conflict Zone of Northern and North Eastern India
Afghan, Tibetan, Burmese, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan refugees and enterprise education in South Asia
Teaching South Asian refugee case history: challenges and opportunities
Connecting refugee research and policy in South Asian countries

7. Third Global Teacher Education Summit

The Third Global Teacher Education Summit sponsored by Faculty of Education at Beijing Normal University is going to take place on 13-16 October 2017 in Beijing, P.R. China.

The theme of the conference is “Envisioning the Teaching and Learning of Teachers for Excellence and Equity in Education”, and the sub-themes of the conference involve envisioning excellence and equity in the education system, educating teachers for diverse educational settings, cultivating teacher professionalism for educational excellence and equity, imagining new praxes of teaching and learning, and fostering leadership capabilities in schools and learning communities.
We intend to provide a platform for an in-depth and cross-cultural dialogue among educators and researchers from different parts of the world, and establish a broad view on the excellence and equity of education and teacher education.
